NEPSI's Metal-Enclosed Harmonic Filter Banks come equipped with individually fused single-phase double-bushing capacitors (internally fused capacitors are provided on request). The capacitors are rated for harmonic filter duty and are normally connected in an ungrounded-wye or split-ungrounded-wye configuration, but can be connected in a grounded-wye or delta configuration for technical or preferential reasons.
All Capacitors contain an internal discharge resistor to reduce the stored voltage to 50 volts or less within 5 minutes from disconnection.
The capacitors have a low loss, non-PCB, all film design that meet or exceeds IEEE, IEC, and ANSI standards.
NEPSI utilizes capacitors from one of three North American suppliers, ABB, GE, or Cooper Power Systems, based upon quality, price, lead-time, and availability at time of order. Specific request for a particular supplier are honored.
The capacitors's kvar rating is based on tuning point requirements and kvar output requirements for the harmonic filter. Voltage ratings are increased for harmonic filter duty with the following considerations:
- Maximum expected harmonic filter current. Peaks of individual harmomics are assumed to be 100% coincident.
- Nominal system over-voltage of 5%
- Ambient voltage distortion equal to the limits set forth by IEEE 519 (at the PCC) or values obtained during measurement
- Adherence to IEEE/ANSI maximum continuous operating values:
- 110% of rated RMS voltage
- 120% of rated peak voltage, i.e. peak voltage not exceeding 1.2 x (square root of two or 1.414) x rated rms voltage, including harmonics, but excluding transients (harmonic currents are 100% coincident).
- 135% of nominal RMS current based on rated kvar and rated voltage.
