CAPACITOR SWITCHES

Single stage and multi-stage capacitor banks are equipped with various switching devices that reliably energize and de-energize shunt power capacitors. These switching devices are often combined with the key interlock, protection, and control systems to allow for a fully integrated power capacitor bank. Switching devices include circuit breakers (fixed and drawout), vacuum contactors, and capacitor switches.

For transient free switching, NEPSI recommends the Southern States CapSwitcher. This device uses per-insertion resistor technology to attenuate switching transients. Vacuum Contactors are most often used on systems with voltages from 2.4kV through 7.2kV.

The ABB PS capacitor switches are applied on systems with voltages between 7.2kV and 24kV. For systems with high short circuit currents or bank ratings that exceed available PS vacuum switch ratings or contactor ratings, Circuit breakers are recommended.

The table below provides the popular switching devices used by NEPSI. Other devices are considered on customer request and applied if determined suitable for the capacitor bank rating and application.
