NEPSI announced they have completed the commissioning of their Metal-Enclosed Harmonic Filter System at the Red Chris Mine located 80 km south of Dease Lake in Tahltan traditional territory in northwest British Columbia.

The filter system supplies reactive power and harmonic filtering to the mine's 30,000 tonne-per-day mill, which includes two ABB 9,000-hp variable frequency drives. The filter system is metal-enclosed and is rated 23,000 kvar at 24.9kV, with a basic insulation level (BIL) of 150kV. It is a 5-stage design consisting of C-High Pass, High Pass, and Notch filter branches that are switched on and off automatically based on the mine's reactive power (vars). The all-inclusive design encompassed all protection, control, switching, and interlocking requirements.

The metal-enclosed system was chosen instead of an open-rack filter system due to the remoteness of the mine and its harsh arctic environment, which sits at the tree line at an elevation of 1,500 meters with temperatures that vary from average lows of -21°C (-6°F) in January to average highs of 9°C (48°F) in July with extremes ranging from -50°C(-58°F) to 30°C (86°F).

Mark Howson, the NEPSI field technician who commissioned the project, said that the fully integrated package offered by NEPSI was a deciding factor in Red Chris going with a metal-enclosed filter design. "You see, NEPSI's filter systems are shipped fully assembled, tested, and ready for interconnection from NEPSI. This allows for faster installation and commissioning... and in this remote environment, that equates to lower cost."

Red Chris Mine Copper-Gold Mine is owned and operated by Red Chris Development Company (RCDC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Imperial Metals.

NEPSI is the world's leading supplier of medium-voltage metal-enclosed power capacitor banks and harmonic filter banks. NEPSI's equipment is used around the world by industrial, commercial, and utility power system owners and operators with voltages from 2.4kV through 38kV to correct power factor and improve power quality.
