NEPSI recently shipped two 13.8KV metal-enclosed multi-tuned harmonic filter systems for the 55K Metcalf Twin Ball Mill Expansion Project at the Morenci Copper Mine (Morenci, Arizona), the largest Copper producer in North America. The harmonic filter banks were purchased to improve power factor, voltage, mitigate harmonics, and are critical to the operation of the mine.

The filters consisted of 2nd C-Type, 5th High-pass, and 11th Notch tuned branches with a total output rating of 11 MVARs (22 Mvars for the complete filter system) and are equipped with an integral fixed-mounted SF6 circuit breaker that provides both protection and switching functions.

The enclosure is constructed to withstand the harsh environmental conditions of the mine and to reduce heating from solar radiation. The filter system is compartmentalized, much like switchgear, to allow for the highest degree of reliability and reduction in collateral damage for system faults. Additional protections were incorporated to reduce Arc Flash energy and pressure should a fault occur, and supervisory control and gateway communication to the mine’s DCS system were also included.

Planned commissioning of the Filter System is planned for early 2014.
